SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 12Kinematics of Linear Motion

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 10 marks · Form 5, Kinematics of Linear Motion · 6:58 video

The question

Two particles P and Q move along a straight line such that the displacement of the particles from a fixed point O is s m. Particle P starts moving from A with s_P = 10 + 8t - 8t² and at the same time particle Q starts moving from B with s_Q = 6t² - 9t - 12, where t is the time, in seconds, after the two particles have started moving. (a) Find the distance, in m, between A and B. (b) Find the time, in seconds, when the particles met each other. (c) Calculate the total distance, in m, travelled by particle P when both particles met each other.

SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 12: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:58

Step 1

A is the starting position of P: put t = 0 in s_P, s_P(0) = 10 + 0 - 0 = 10, so A is at +10 m from O.

10 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(a) 22 m, (b) t = 2 s, (c) 20 m

Where students lose marks

Watch out: P turns back at t = 0.5 s, so add both legs (2 + 18 m), not the net 16 m.
