SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 13: the question as drawn in Eduly's video7:05

Step 1

Convert each 'change in price index' into a price index number with base year 2013 = 100. An increase adds to 100 and a decrease subtracts from it: P = 140, Q = 120, R = 160, S = 90.

Why this step

The table gives changes, not indices. Convert first: a rise adds to 100 and a fall subtracts, so S (10% down) is 90, not −10.

7 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(a) RM5.04 (b) RM40 000 (c) 78.5% increase

Where students lose marks

Watch out: convert changes to indices (140, 90), find R = 30% first, and multiply indices in (c), don't add 50.
