Kuala Lumpur Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 14Index Numbers
Solved on video in English · Form 4, Index Numbers · 5:36 video
The question
Table 3 shows the price indices for four materials P, Q, R and S used in the production of a school bag, for the year 2024 based on the year 2023: P = 110, Q = 136, R = 120, S = 125.
(a) Calculate the price of item S in the year 2024 if its price in the year 2023 is RM12.
Table 3 shows the price indices for the year 2024 based on 2023 (P = 110, Q = 136, R = 120, S = 125).
(b) If the price index of item P increases by 20% from the year 2024 to the year 2025, calculate the price index of item P in the year 2025 based on the year 2023. Interpret the value obtained.
The composite index for the production cost of the school bag in the year 2024 based on the year 2023 is 121.
(c)(i) Calculate the price of a school bag in the year 2024 if its price in the year 2023 is RM90.
(c)(ii) Find the value of n if the costs of items P, Q, R and S used are in the ratio 8 : 5 : n : 4.
5:36Part (a)
Step 1
Price index I = (Price₂₀₂₄ / Price₂₀₂₃) × 100.
Why this step
The base year (2023) always goes on the bottom, and × 100 makes 100 mean 'no change'. Flipping it or dropping × 100 loses marks.
2 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
RM15
Where students lose marks
Watch out: keep this year's price on top and remember × 100. Don't flip the fraction to 12 ÷ 125.
Part (b)
3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
132; price of P rose 32% from 2023 to 2025
Where students lose marks
Watch out: chain the indices (110 × 120 ÷ 100), don't add 20 to 110. And 132 means a 32% increase, not 132%.
Part (c)(i)
3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
RM108.90
Where students lose marks
Watch out: use the composite index 121 for the whole bag, not the index of one material such as P or S.
Part (c)(ii)
5 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
n = 3
Where students lose marks
Watch out: n belongs in the total weight too, so the denominator is 17 + n. Match each index to its own weight.
