SPM 2021 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 12Kinematics of Linear Motion

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 5, Kinematics of Linear Motion · 6:59 video

The question

(a)

Solution by graph sketching is not accepted. Two particles, A and B, move along a straight line. The velocity of particle A, v_A m s⁻¹, is given by v_A = 24t − 4t² − 20, while the velocity of particle B, v_B m s⁻¹, is given by v_B = 24t − 25, where t is the time, in seconds, after both particles pass the fixed point O. (a) Calculate the maximum velocity, in m s⁻¹, of particle A.

(b)

Particles A and B move along a straight line with v_A = 24t − 4t² − 20 and v_B = 24t − 25, where t is the time in seconds after both pass fixed point O. (b)(i) Find the time, in seconds, when particle A and particle B meet. (b)(ii) Find the total distance, in m, travelled by particle A in the first 5 seconds.

SPM 2021 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 12: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:59

Part (a)

Step 1

Maximum velocity of A occurs when acceleration a_A = dv_A/dt = 0.

Why this step

Velocity peaks where its slope is flat. The slope of velocity is acceleration, so we set a = 0.

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

16 m s⁻¹

Where students lose marks

Watch out: t = 3 is only the time. Substitute it back into v_A to get the maximum velocity.

Part (b)

12 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(i) t = √15/2 ≈ 1.94 s; (ii) 52 m

Where students lose marks

Watch out: show the factorisation in (i). In (ii), mind the signs when combining legs; 42.67 m is a common wrong answer.
