The question

Diagram 1 shows two straight lines, y = qx and x/6 + y/p = 1. The line x/6 + y/p = 1 cuts the y-axis at (0, 2), and the two lines are perpendicular. Find the value of q.

Step 1

The line x/6 + y/p = 1 cuts the y-axis where x = 0: 0/6 + y/p = 1, so y = p. From the diagram the y-intercept is (0, 2), hence p = 2.

Why this step

The y-axis is where x = 0. Putting that in leaves y/p = 1, so y = p, not 1/p. Mixing this up was the common mistake.
