The question

(a)

Diagram 5 shows a trapezium STUV, with ST parallel to UV and point S lying on the x-axis. It is given that UT is parallel to the x-axis and the equation of the line UV is y + 2x + 8 = 0. The coordinates of T and S are (2, 8) and (6, 0) respectively, and there is a right angle at V.

(a) Find the equation of the straight line SV.

(b)(i)

Diagram 5 shows trapezium STUV (ST ∥ UV, S on the x-axis, UT ∥ x-axis, line UV: y + 2x + 8 = 0, T(2,8), S(6,0), right angle at V, and SV: y = ½x − 3).

(b)(i) Find the coordinates of V and U.

(b)(ii)

Diagram 5 shows trapezium STUV with S(6,0), T(2,8), U(−8,8) and V(−2,−4).

(b)(ii) Hence, find the area of trapezium STUV.
