MRSM Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 2Coordinate Geometry

Solved on video in English · Form 4, Coordinate Geometry · 4:19 video

The question

Diagram 1 shows a trapezium ABCD on a Cartesian plane. It is given that the equation of the straight line AB is y = 5x + 3. Find the equation of the straight line which is perpendicular to the straight line CD and passing through the point (5/2, 13/2).

MRSM Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 2: the question as drawn in Eduly's video4:19

Step 1

In trapezium ABCD the sides AB and CD are parallel, so gradient of CD = gradient of AB = 5.

Why this step

AB and CD are the parallel sides of the trapezium, so they share a gradient. Don't treat CD as perpendicular to AB.

4 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

y = −1/5 x + 7

Where students lose marks

Watch out: CD is parallel to AB, not perpendicular, and the final line needs gradient −1/5, not 5.
