Kuala Lumpur Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 10Coordinate Geometry

Solved on video in English · Form 4, Coordinate Geometry · 4:08 video

The question

(a)

Diagram 5 shows polygon ABCDE, an irregular pentagon, with vertices A(2, 5), B(5, 2), C(k, −2), D(−1, h) and E(−3, 4). Given that the area of the pentagon is 39 unit² and line CD is parallel to the x-axis.

(a) State the value of h.

(b)

(b) Hence, find the value of k.

Kuala Lumpur Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 10: the question as drawn in Eduly's video4:08

Part (a)

Step 1

CD is parallel to the x-axis, so C and D have the same y-coordinate.

Why this step

A line parallel to the x-axis is flat, so its height never changes. That means the y-coordinate stays the same, not the x-coordinate.

2 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

h = −2

Where students lose marks

Watch out: a line parallel to the x-axis is horizontal, so it is the y-coordinates that are equal, not the x-coordinates.

Part (b)

5 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

k = 3

Where students lose marks

Watch out: use D(−1, −2) from part (a), list vertices in order, and keep the modulus, since dropping it gives the wrong root.
