Selangor Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 8Coordinate Geometry

Solved on video in English · Form 4, Coordinate Geometry · 6:17 video

The question

(a)

(a) Diagram 4 shows a line segment AB. It is given that point C divides the line segment AB in the ratio m : n. Show that x = (mp + nv)/(m + n).

(b)

(b) Diagram 5 shows the line PQ is a tangent to the circle with centre K(2, −1) at point P(−2, 4). Find the equation of the tangent PQ in general form.

Selangor Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 8: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:17

Part (a)

Step 1

C divides AB in the ratio AC : CB = m : n. Comparing x-coordinates along the segment: (x − v)/(p − x) = m/n.

Why this step

A, C, B lie on one line, so x-distances split in the same ratio m : n. Put the AC run on top, matching m, or the formula flips.

Final answer

Where students lose marks

Watch out: AC : CB = m : n, so (x − v)/(p − x) = m/n. Upside down gives the wrong formula.

Part (b)

5 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

4x − 5y + 28 = 0

Where students lose marks

Watch out: use the perpendicular gradient 4/5, not −5/4, and give the answer in general form ax + by + c = 0.
