SPM 2019 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 14Coordinate Geometry

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 3 marks · Form 4, Coordinate Geometry · 5:33 video

The question

Diagram 5 shows three straight lines, such that k, p, q and r are constants. One line has equation ky = 3x+6. Another line has equation x/p - y/q = 1 and crosses the y-axis at the same point as ky=3x+6. A third line, parallel to ky=3x+6, shares its x-intercept with the line x/p - y/q = 1, and crosses the y-axis at the point r. Express (a) k in terms of q, (b) r in terms of k and p.

SPM 2019 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 14: the question as drawn in Eduly's video5:33

Step 1

Rearrange ky=3x+6 into gradient form: y = (3/k)x + 6/k, so gradient 3/k and y-intercept 6/k.

6 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(a) k = −6/q; (b) r = −3p/k

Where students lose marks

Watch out: shared intercept means equal intercepts (6/k = −q); parallel means equal gradients (3/k = −r/p). Don't swap the two pairs.
