SPM 2017 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 6Coordinate Geometry
Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 6 marks · Form 4, Coordinate Geometry · 5:38 video
The question
Diagram 4 shows a cylindrical container with the length of 20 cm placed on the floor against the wall. Q is a point on the edge of the base of the container. It is given that the distance of point Q is 2 cm from the wall and 1 cm from the floor. Mira wants to keep the container in a box with a dimension of 21 cm x 7 cm x 7 cm. Determine whether the container can be kept in that box or otherwise. Give a reason for your answer.
[6 marks]
5:38Step 1
Let r be the radius of the circular base. Treat the corner as two perpendicular reference lines (wall and floor); since the circle is tangent to both, its centre O is at perpendicular distance r from each
8 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
Cannot be kept: diameter 10 cm > 7 cm
Where students lose marks
Watch out: reject r = 1, and check the 10 cm diameter against 7 cm, not just 20 cm against 21 cm.
