SPM 2024 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 9Linear Law
Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 4, Linear Law · 4:56 video
The question
Table 2.1 shows the values of two variables, x and y, obtained from an experiment. The variables x and y are related by the equation y = a/(b − x), such that a and b are constants.
x: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 y: 0.28, 0.32, 0.39, 0.49, 0.61, 1
(a) Based on Table 2.1, fill in Table 2.2 (the values of 1/y).
(b) Plot 1/y against x, using a scale of 2 cm to 0.5 unit on the 1/y-axis and 2 cm to 1 unit on the x-axis. Hence, draw the line of best fit.
(c) Using the graph in (b): (i) find the value of y when x = 4.5. (ii) reduce y = a/(b − x) to linear form, hence find the value of a and of b.
Step 1
Compute 1/y for each x value:
15 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
(a) 3.57, 3.13, 2.56, 2.04, 1.64, 1.00; (c)(i) y ≈ 0.5714; (c)(ii) a ≈ 1.923, b ≈ 7.884
Where students lose marks
Watch out: in 1/y = b/a − (1/a)x, the gradient is −1/a and the Y-intercept is b/a, not the other way round.
