Melaka Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 11Linear Law

Solved on video in English · Form 4, Linear Law · 6:20 video

The question

(a)

Use graph paper to answer this question. Table 1 shows the values of two variables, x and y, obtained from an experiment. Variables x and y are related by the equation y = r / d^(−√x), where r and d are constants.

(a) Based on Table 1, complete Table 1(b) in the answer space provided by finding √x and log₁₀ y.

(b)

Using Table 1(b) (√x and log₁₀ y):

(b) Plot log₁₀ y against √x, using a scale of 2 cm to 2 units on the √x-axis and 2 cm to 0.1 unit on the log₁₀ y-axis. Hence, draw the line of best fit.

(c)(i)

Variables x and y are related by y = r / d^(−√x) (equivalently y = r · d^(√x)). Using your graph in 11(b):

(c)(i) Find the value of r.

(c)(ii)

Using your graph in 11(b):

(c)(ii) Find the value of d.

Melaka Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 11: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:20

Part (a)

Step 1

Compute √x for each x: √4 = 2, √16 = 4, √36 = 6, √64 = 8, √100 = 10, √144 = 12.

Why this step

The straight-line graph uses √x on the horizontal axis, so this row holds √x, not x itself. Mixing them up is a common slip.

1 more step, with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

√x: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12; log₁₀ y: 0.27, 0.42, 0.59, 0.74, 0.90, 1.05

Where students lose marks

Watch out: put √x (not x) in the table, and give log₁₀ y to 2 decimal places to match the graph scale.

Part (b)

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

Graph (see video)

Where students lose marks

Use the stated scales, plot each point accurately, and draw one straight best-fit line. Do not join the dots one by one.

Part (c)(i)

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

r = 1.288

Where students lose marks

Watch out: the intercept gives log₁₀ r, not r. Raise 10 to that power to get r; the gradient is for d, not r.

Part (c)(ii)

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

d = 1.202

Where students lose marks

Watch out: the gradient is log₁₀ d, not d, so take the antilog: d = 10⁰.08. Rise over run, with log₁₀ y on top.
