Solved on video in English · Form 4, Linear Law · 3:45 video

The question

Diagram 3 shows the graph of a straight line drawn to represent the equation y = x/(px + q), where p and q are constants. Find the value of p and of q.

Kuala Lumpur Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 7: the question as drawn in Eduly's video3:45

Step 1

Rearrange y = x/(px + q): take reciprocals, 1/y = (px + q)/x = p + q(1/x).

Why this step

Flip the whole fraction on both sides, then split it. That turns the curve into 1/y = p + q(1/x), which is linear in 1/x. Wrongly flipping loses marks.

4 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

p = 10, q = −2

Where students lose marks

Watch out: flip the whole fraction, keep 1/y on the vertical axis and 1/x on the horizontal, and mind the signs when subtracting.
