Melaka Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 7Linear Law

Solved on video in English · Form 4, Linear Law · 4:27 video

The question

(a)

Diagram 3 shows the straight line QR obtained by plotting xy against x². The variables x and y are related by the equation y + 3x = 4/x.

(a) Express the equation y + 3x = 4/x in its linear form, which is used to obtain the straight line graph shown.

(b)(i)

Diagram 3 shows the straight line QR obtained by plotting xy against x², where the line passes through R(0, 6t) and Q(m, n), and x and y are related by y + 3x = 4/x.

(b)(i) Hence, find the value of t.

(b)(ii)

(b)(ii) Express m in terms of n.

Melaka Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 7: the question as drawn in Eduly's video4:27

Part (a)

Step 1

Multiply the whole equation y + 3x = 4/x by x to clear the fraction: xy + 3x² = 4.

Why this step

The graph plots xy against x², so we multiply every term by x. Don't skip any: 3x must become 3x², not stay as 3x.

2 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

xy = −3x² + 4

Where students lose marks

Watch out: multiply every term by x, so 3x becomes 3x² (not 3x), then rearrange so xy stands alone on the left.

Part (b)(i)

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

t = 2/3

Where students lose marks

Watch out: 6t is the Y-intercept (4), not the gradient (−3). Then simplify 4/6 to 2/3.

Part (b)(ii)

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

m = (4 − n)/3

Where students lose marks

Watch out: the horizontal value m is X and the vertical value n is Y. Take care with signs when making m the subject.
