SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 13Linear Law
Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 3 marks · Form 4, Linear Law · 5:48 video
The question
Diagram 6 shows the graph of a straight line x²/y against 1/x. Based on Diagram 6, express y in terms of x.
[3 marks]
5:48Step 1
The straight-line graph plots Y = x²/y against X = 1/x, so the linear relation is Y = mX + c, i.e. x²/y = m(1/x) + c.
Why this step
A straight line always has the form Y = mX + c. So we treat x²/y as Y and 1/x as X, then read m and c off the graph.
6 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
y = 2x³/(3 − 10x)
Where students lose marks
Watch out: x² × 2x is 2x³, not 2x. And don't stop at x²/y = (3 − 10x)/(2x); make y the subject.
