Solve the following simultaneous equations: x - 3y = 1, x² + 3xy + 9y² = 7.

Step 1

From x - 3y = 1, express x in terms of y: x = 3y + 1 ... (3)

One equation is linear, so we can solve it for x and put that into the quadratic. This leaves just one unknown, y.
