Kuala Lumpur Trial 2025 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 4Systems of Equations
Solved on video in English · Form 4, Systems of Equations · 5:41 video
The question
Solve the following simultaneous equations: x + 3y = 12, y² − x² − 2xy = 8.
5:41Step 1
From the linear equation, make x the subject: x = 12 − 3y (or equivalently y = (12 − x)/3).
Why this step
A linear equation is easy to rearrange. Writing x in terms of y lets us swap it into the harder equation, leaving one equation with only y.
4 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
x = 0.7386, y = 3.754; x = −48.75, y = 20.25
Where students lose marks
Watch out: expand (12 − 3y)² fully, with its middle term, and keep each x paired with its own y.
