SPM 2024 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 3Indices, Surds & Logarithms

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 4, Indices, Surds & Logarithms · 4:52 video

The question

(a) Given that p^(x−2) · q^(x+2) = (pq)²x), show that (pq)^x = (q/p)².

(b) Express k/(4 − √7) + √28 in the form p + q√7 in terms of k, such that p and q are constants.

Step 1

Expand LHS using index laws:

Final answer

(a) Shown (b) 4k/9 + ((k + 18)/9)√7, so p = 4k/9, q = (k + 18)/9

Where students lose marks

Watch out: write every simplification step. When combining the √7 terms, rewrite 2 as 18/9 before adding, or you will slip on k/9 + 2.
