Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 10 marks · Form 4, Index Numbers · 6:41 video

The question

Table 2 shows the prices and the price indices of three types of ingredients A, B and C, used in the production of a type of fish ball. Table 2: Ingredient A: price RM5.00 (2014), RM6.64 (2016), price index (2016 based on 2014) = 132.8, weightage 50. Ingredient B: price RM y (2014), RM3.00 (2016), price index = x, weightage 20. Ingredient C: price RM0.50 (2014), RM0.95 (2016), price index = 190, weightage 1. (a) The price of ingredient B is increased by 20% from the year 2014 to the year 2016. (i) State the value of x. (ii) Find the value of y. (b) Calculate the composite index for the cost of making the fish balls for the year 2016 based on the year 2014. (c) It is given that the composite index for the cost of making the fish balls increased by 40% from the year 2012 to the year 2016. (i) Calculate the composite index for the cost of making the fish balls in the year 2014 based on the year 2012. (ii) The cost of making a fish ball is 10 sen in the year 2012. Find the maximum number of fish balls that can be produced using an allocation of RM80 in the year 2016.

SPM 2017 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 13: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:41

Step 1

Price of B increased by 20%, so index x = 100 + 20 = 120

Why this step

Index is the price as a percentage of the base year, and the base is 100. A 20% rise means 120% of the old price.

7 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(a)(i) x = 120; (ii) y = RM2.50; (b) 130; (c)(i) 107.69; (ii) 571

Where students lose marks

Watch out: weight each index by its weightage (not a simple average), and track the base year when chaining in (c).
