SPM 2023 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 6Progressions

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 4, Progressions · 7:41 video

The question

There are two geometric progressions, A and B. The first term of A is 8 and the first term of B is 4. Both progressions have the same sum to infinity. The sum of the 3rd term of A and the 3rd term of B is 9/4. The tenth term of A is negative.

A student states that the sum of the first 4 terms of A is larger than the sum of the first 4 terms of B. Is the statement correct? Give your justification.

SPM 2023 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 6: the question as drawn in Eduly's video7:41

Step 1

Let A have first term 8 and common ratio x; B have first term 4 and common ratio y.

10 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

Not correct: S4(A) = 5 < S4(B) = 5.3125

Where students lose marks

Watch out: T10(A) < 0 means x < 0, which rejects y = 23/36. Then compare both S4 values, not just state 'no'.
