SPM 2021 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 10Progressions

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 4, Progressions · 6:46 video

The question

(a)

Diagram 7 shows a roll of aluminium with a length of 55 440 mm that can be cut exactly into 72 sections. The length of the first sheet is x mm and the length of each subsequent sheet increases by 20 mm. Atan is assigned to cut the aluminium roll. State the length, in mm, of the first three aluminium sheets in terms of x.

(b)

Atan has completed 2/3 of his task. By determining the value of x, calculate the total length, in mm, of the last 18 sheets that have been cut. (The roll is 55 440 mm, cut into 72 sheets; first sheet x mm, each subsequent sheet 20 mm longer.)

(c)

The cut aluminium sheets can be formed into a cylinder open at both ends in two different ways. After Atan completed his (full) task, his brother chose the last sheet to form a cylinder with maximum volume. By calculation, suggest the cylinder that fulfils the condition. (Roll 55 440 mm cut into 72 sheets; first sheet 60 mm, common difference 20 mm; sheet width 500 mm.)

SPM 2021 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 10: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:46

Part (a)

Step 1

The sheet lengths form an arithmetic progression with first term x and common difference 20.

Why this step

Each sheet is the same 20 mm longer than the one before. A constant gap between terms is the sign of an arithmetic progression.

2 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

x, x + 20, x + 40 (mm)

Where students lose marks

Watch out: the question asks for all three lengths, x, x + 20 and x + 40, not only the third term.

Part (b)

7 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

x = 60 mm, total = 14 940 mm

Where students lose marks

Watch out: Atan finished only 2/3, so use sheets 31 to 48 (S₄₈ − S₃₀), not the last 18 of all 72 sheets.

Part (c)

6 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

Height 500 mm, radius 740/π mm (V₁ > V₂)

Where students lose marks

Watch out: work out the volume of both cylinders and compare them, otherwise you cannot justify which one is the maximum.
