SPM 2024 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 5Differentiation

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 5, Differentiation · 5:31 video

The question

A curve has a gradient function dy/dx = 4x − 6 and passes through P(1, 4).

(a) Find the equation of the curve.

(b) The normal to the curve at point P intersects the curve again at point Q. Find the coordinates of Q.

Step 1

Integrate the gradient function:

16 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

(a) y = 2x² − 6x + 8; (b) Q = (9/4, 37/8)

Where students lose marks

Watch out: use P(1, 4) to find c, and reject x = 1 (that is P itself) to get Q at x = 9/4.
