SPM 2020 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 24Probability Distribution

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 3 marks · Form 5, Probability Distribution · 5:37 video

The question

Diagram 12 shows a memo issued by a company: 'Cash Reward - We will be giving out RM1 000 to anyone who is able to sell all the 10 units of the allocated product before 31/12/2020. Condition: Individual sales only.' Based on the previous records, a sales person was able to sell 5 out of 7 units of the products. If the company allocated RM8 000 as a reward and there are 270 sales persons, is the allocation enough? Give your justification.

SPM 2020 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 24: the question as drawn in Eduly's video5:37

Step 1

Let X = number of units a sales person sells out of 10. X ~ B(10, 5/7) since p = 5/7 per unit.

Why this step

Each unit either sells or not, with the same chance 5/7, and we treat the 10 units as independent. That is exactly the binomial pattern.

4 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

No: about 9 sales persons qualify, needing RM9 000 > RM8 000

Where students lose marks

Watch out: 9.334 counts people, so round to 9, not up to 10. Rounding up gives RM10 000 and a wrong justification.
