SPM 2020 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 1Functions

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 4 marks · Form 4, Functions · 3:57 video

The question

(a)

Diagram 1 shows a graph of a function y = f(x) for 0 <= x <= 5. The curve has a maximum point at (5/2, 9/2), cuts the x-axis at x = 1 and x = 4, and meets the y-axis at -4. State the objects of 0.

[2 marks]

(b)

State the range of the function if y = |f(x)|.

SPM 2020 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 1: the question as drawn in Eduly's video3:57

Part (a)

Step 1

The objects of 0 are the x-values (inputs) whose image f(x) = 0.

Why this step

An object is an input x and its image is the output f(x). So 'objects of 0' asks which inputs give an output of 0.

3 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

1 and 4

Where students lose marks

Watch out: objects are x-values. Do not list −4, it is the image of 0 (a y-value), not an object.

Part (b)

5 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution

Final answer

0 ≤ y ≤ 9/2

Where students lose marks

Watch out: write the range using y, as 0 ≤ y ≤ 9/2, not 0 ≤ f(x) ≤ 9/2.
