Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 6 marks · Form 5, Differentiation · 6:38 video

The question

Diagram 4 shows the front view of a part of a roller coaster track in a miniature park. The curve part of the track of the roller coaster is represented by an equation y = (1/64)x³ − (3/16)x², with point P as the origin. Find the shortest vertical distance, in m, from the track to ground level.

SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 2, Question 6: the question as drawn in Eduly's video6:38

Step 1

The lowest point of the track is a minimum of the curve, so differentiate: y = (1/64)x³ − (3/16)x² gives dy/dx = (3/64)x² − (3/8)x.

Final answer

1 m

Where students lose marks

Watch out: y = −4 is only the dip below P. Subtract 4 from P's 5 m height to get 1 m.
