SPM 2018 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 15Progressions
Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 3 marks · Form 4, Progressions · 4:26 video
The question
A student has a wire with the length of 13.16 m. The student divided the wire into several pieces. Each piece is to form a square. Diagram 7 shows the first three squares formed by the student. How many squares can be formed by the student?
[3 marks]
4:26Step 1
The perimeter of a square is 4 x side length, so the first three squares (sides 4, 7, 10 cm) have perimeters 16 cm, 28 cm and 40 cm.
Why this step
The wire wraps around the edge of each square, so the length used is the perimeter, not the side. Adding sides is a common mistake.

Final answer
14 squares
Where students lose marks
Watch out: convert 13.16 m to 1316 cm first, and sum the perimeters (16, 28, 40, …) with Sn, not the side lengths.
