SPM 2017 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 1Differentiation

Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · 2 marks · Form 5, Differentiation · 5:28 video

The question

Diagram 1 shows a cubic graph y = f(x) and a linear graph y = g(x). Point A lies on the straight line. Points B, C and D lie on the curve. The tangents to the curve at points B and C are parallel to the x-axis. State which point(s) that satisfies the following condition: (a) dy/dx = 0. (b) dy/dx < 0. (c) d²y/dx² > 0.

SPM 2017 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 1: the question as drawn in Eduly's video5:28

Step 1

dy/dx = 0 means the tangent is horizontal, i.e. a turning point. The question states the tangents at B and C are parallel to the x-axis, so dy/dx = 0 at B and C.

Why this step

A tangent parallel to the x-axis is flat, and a flat line has gradient 0. So the question already tells us dy/dx = 0 at B and C.

Final answer

(a) B and C; (b) A; (c) C
