SPM 2024 Add Maths Paper 1, Question 2Functions
Solved on video in English and Bahasa Melayu · Form 4, Functions · 3:52 video
The question
Diagram 2 shows the relation of two sets. Set A = {−1, 2, 3, 5} and Set B = {−5, 10, 15, 20, 25}. Arrows map: −1 to −5, 2 to 10, 3 to 15, 5 to 25. State the range of the relation.
Function g(x) = 3 − x is expressed in the form of ordered pairs as below: {(−2, 5), (4, p − 10), (p, −6)}. Find the value of p.
Part (a)
Step 1
The range is the set of all images, i.e. elements in Set B that are mapped to by at least one element of Set A.
2 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
Range = {−5, 10, 15, 25}
Where students lose marks
Watch out: write the range with curly braces, {−5, 10, 15, 25}. Without set notation you lose the mark.
Part (b)
4 more steps, each with the reason for it, in the full solution
Final answer
p = 9
Where students lose marks
Watch out: solve p − 10 = −1 by adding 10 to both sides to get p = 9, not p = 11.
